An old, grainy photograph that his brother Riccardo had taken for one of his reports in Iraq inspired Italian artist Mario Romani to create this portrait. It shows the natural and melancholic expression of an old Iraqi man who is enjoying his cigarette to the fullest. For these people, a cigarette had become an unaffordable luxury that a person buys per cigarette, and not per pack, as in the western countries.

About the artist:

After Italian airbrush artist Mario Romani noticed that his engineering studies weren’t quite up his alley, he began to concentrate on illustrations and graphics, working many years as an art director in a small advertising agency. In the 80s, the native Roman was taught the techniques of airbrushing by Giuseppe Parmiani in Bologna. In 1990, he opened his own airbrush studio and has since been offering courses across Italy as well as in foreign countries. In addition, he teaches confectioners in the field of food decoration using the airbrush at both Italian and international occupational schools. Many of his students have been distinguished in international competitions and two even ended up being pastry chef world champions.
