After the great success of their beginner book “Airbrushing 101“ (see ASBS issue No. 61, 04/21), American airbrush artists Maryellen Vettori and Bob Keeling are putting more wood in the fire. The book ”Airbrushing 102“ ties on to their first book on this topic and continues educating artists with 19 airbrush projects. Whereas the first book primarily dealt with mastering and controlling the airbrush, the new book is all about building more complex artworks and practical techniques that also belong to airbrush painting just like the application of paint itself, namely proportion and composition, light and shadow, selecting references, tracing motifs, and masking techniques. Also new to the book is the topic of color. Admittedly, the book is only in black and white, but color is joining the party for airbrush projects. The authors have cleverly mastered the balancing act between colorful airbrush artworks and black/white letterpress. For every project and whenever you’re dealing with the topic of paint and color, there’s a QR code and a password allowing you to take a look at color illustrations online.

For the projects, a number of classic airbrush topics have been taken into consideration, namely wooden structures, water drops, balls (spheres), stones, metal textures, crack effects, fish/scale structures, fried eggs, fruit still life, skull & bones, and a colorful freehand T-shirt painting. For every project, there’s a material and paint list that would be required for conducting the respective artwork. Readers will even find the templates for stencils and maskings on the final pages of the book, where he/she can simply copy the contour drawings. All in all, the book makes it quite clear that the two authors have a great deal of experience in teaching, as nothing is left to chance. Time and again, throughout the entire book, you’ll find all sorts of references as to where i.e. the respective exercise, template or other information on the respective task or problem can be found.
